AEDs Put the Power of Saving Lives in Your Hands

When Seconds Count, You Can Save a Life — Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) claims
the lives of 220,000 people in this country every year. It can happen anytime,
anywhere.  And when SCA strikes, seconds mean the difference between life and
death.  With each minute of elapsed time, the survival rate diminishes by 10 percent.
Thanks to a portable device called an automated external defibrillator (AED) and
training in how to use it available through the American Red Cross, ordinary people
can save lives. By delivering an electric shock to the heart, an AED can restore
a heart's normal rhythm. Immediate use of an AED, in conjunction with CPR, could
save up to 50,000 lives a year. The American Red Cross strongly advocates
increased public AED access and training. As a result, more and more public facilities are placing AEDs onsite wherever large groups of people congregate, including airports, shopping malls, office buildings and stadiums.

Injury Control Modules (1 hour each)
Focusing on common causes of worksite injuries and key health risks, these one-hour
awareness-level modules highlight risks and promote prevention.  Self-assessments help employees recognize risky habits.  Demonstrations and lively discussions reinforce practical prevention tips.  Modules include: Ergonomics;  Slips, Trips and Falls;  Back Injury Prevention;  Workplace Violence Awareness;  Managing Stress;
and Your Heart Matters.

Preventing Disease Transmission (2 hours)
A training module for employers and employees who, while on the job, may be exposed to blood or other body fluids that could cause infection.  Employers can offer this program as part of their compliance with OSHA regulations.  Available
in English and Spanish.

Laypersons can learn when and how to use supplemental oxygen and breathing devices.  Professional rescuers also learn advanced skills in airway management.

First Aid--When Help Is Delayed (2 hours)
This first aid course helps people prepare for and respond to an emergency where
an EMS response could take 30 minutes or more.
